Ex-Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi passes away at 86

Silvio Berlusconi, an 86-year-old media tycoon and former leader of Italy, passed away on Monday. His polarising views and audacious outbursts regularly alarmed his pals. Berlusconi, Italy's longest-serving prime minister, was well-known for his "bunga bunga" sex gatherings and was close with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia. He had recently received a lung infection diagnosis and had previously fought leukemia. He died at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan after being hospitalized on Friday. According to a hospital spokesperson, he was joined by his five children, his partner Marta Fascina, and his younger brother Paolo. The government has declared Wednesday a day of national mourning, and there will be a state funeral in Milan Cathedral on that day.

Flags will be flying at half-mast through Wednesday. With the backing of his media empire and considerable wealth, Berlusconi entered politics in 1994, upsetting pre-existing parties and becoming prime minister. Twenty years later, another billionaire using a similar approach would be Donald Trump in the US. His Forza Italia party, a minor partner in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing coalition, would be shocked by his death, but if she can win over his party's MPs and supporters, it might strengthen her position in power. The future of Berlusconi's burgeoning business empire is likewise uncertain. He didn't say who will take full control of his companies after his death, including MFE (MFEB.MI), although his oldest daughter Marina is expected to have a big role.
