Dorothy Hoffner, a remarkable 104-year-old from Chicago, recently made history by swapping her walker for a parachute and harness, aiming to become the world's oldest skydiver. Her daring 13,500-foot tandem jump at Skydive Chicago Airport in Ottawa, Ill., left the crowd in awe. Now, Skydive Chicago is working diligently to secure official recognition from Guinness World Records for her seven-minute, record-setting leap.
Age Is No Barrier
In the midst of jubilant cheers from onlookers, Hoffner boldly declared, "Age is just a number" after her breathtaking feat. If confirmed, her achievement will eclipse the previous record set in May 2022 by 103-year-old Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson of Sweden. Notably, this wasn't Hoffner's first foray into skydiving; she took her first plunge at age 100, requiring a gentle nudge to start her descent. However, this time, she led the jump herself.
From Mobility Aid to Parachute
Hoffner left her crimson walker by the aircraft's side, gearing up for her historic leap into the annals of skydiving history. Observers described her as "calm and confident" as she stood on the precipice, more than 2.5 miles above the rural Midwest landscape. Accompanied by a certified instructor from the U.S. Parachute Association, Hoffner gripped her harness, edged closer to the aircraft's edge, and took a leap of faith.

Upon a safe touchdown on a grassy patch at the airport, Hoffner found herself surrounded by friends eager to extend their heartfelt congratulations. She enthusiastically shared her experience with reporters, describing it as "delightful, wonderful, couldn't have been better." With her 105th birthday approaching in December, Hoffner shows no signs of slowing down and has already set her sights on her next airborne adventure – a hot-air balloon ride.
