Many flights in Hong Kong have been cancelled as Tropical Storm 'Koinu' approaches the southern Chinese city, after leaving one person dead and more than 300 injured in Taiwan, according to reports surfacing online.
On Sunday night, Koinu is expected to pass about 43 miles away from Hong Kong, bringing heavy rain, according to Hong Kong Observatory. Hong Kong raised its highest storm warning signal, shutting down the city with shops, schools, and public transportation closing or reducing services. About 90 flights were cancelled and another 130 were delayed during the day due to the storm, according to the Hong Kong Airports Authority. The Hong Kong government received reports of 11 fallen trees and six people injured in the typhoon on Sunday afternoon.
"Koinu is a mature typhoon with eyewalls lining the region closer to seas to the south," the Hong Kong Observatory said, warning the public to avoid low-lying areas during the storm. Southern China is often hit by typhoons during the summer and autumn months, which form in the warm oceans east of the Philippines and then travel west. But climate change has made tropical storms more unpredictable and intense, bringing more rain and stronger winds that can lead to flash floods and coastal damage, experts say.
