Severe storms and tornadoes swept through Tennessee on Saturday, leaving at least six people dead and causing extensive damage. A tornado that touched down in the area killed three people, including one child, according to Montgomery County, Tennessee. An additional 23 people were treated at the hospital. The Nashville Office of Emergency Management reported three more deaths in the suburbs of Nashville.
The storms left over 80,000 people without power in Tennessee. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office reported damage to several homes in the city of Clarksville. The rural town of Dresden also experienced damage to trees, power lines, and houses.
"This is a sad day for our community," stated Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden in his sympathies. We are offering prayers to individuals who have suffered injuries, lost loved ones, or lost their homes.
Emergency services urged people to stay off the roads as they responded to the situation. Montgomery County stated that they were still in the search and rescue phase of the disaster. A local school and church were set up to provide shelter and assistance to those displaced by the storms.
The National Weather Service had issued a tornado emergency alert earlier in the day for several Nashville suburbs. Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts acknowledged the extensive damage throughout the community, stating, "This is a day that nobody wanted or expected."
The severe storms and tornadoes in Tennessee have caused significant devastation and loss of life. The disaster-affected communities are currently concentrating on recovery efforts and offering assistance to those who need it.
