On Thursday evening, shots were fired inside a Jehovah's Witnesses building in the Gross Borstel district of Hamburg, resulting in deaths and injuries. Police spokesman Holger Vehren confirmed that several people were killed, and several others were taken to hospitals with injuries. The severity of the injuries sustained by the wounded remains unknown.
Local media footage showed a significant police presence outside the modern three-storey Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall building. Police were notified of the shooting at about 9:15 p.m. and arrived promptly. After officers arrived, they heard a shot from an upper floor and found a person upstairs who may have been the shooter. Fortunately, the police did not have to use their firearms.
Mr Vehren said that it is unlikely that the perpetrator or perpetrators are on the run and that they could either be inside the building or among the deceased. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and the event that was happening in the building when the shooting occurred is also unclear. Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher expressed his condolences to the victims' families via a tweet, calling the news "shocking."
