Greta Thunberg led protesters and blocked the entrance to the Swedish parliament, calling for immediate changes to address the worsening climate crisis. The purpose of the demonstration, "Climate Justice Now," is to make it clear to legislators that urgent action is required.
21-year-old climate activist Thunberg expressed dissatisfaction over the climate justice movement's decades-long repetition of the same theme. She claims that the corporations that produce fossil fuels deliberately obstruct the world's transition to renewable energy sources because their interests are more important to them than the environment.
After starting weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, Thunberg became well-known throughout the world. This led to the emergence of a global youth movement that called for stronger measures to tackle climate change. Even though she is being fined for her civil disobedience in Sweden and the UK, Thunberg is still a well-known advocate for climate action. She was cleared of all charges in 2018 after a protest blocked the entrance to a significant oil and gas industry conference in London, and she had refused to follow a police order.
The Swedish parliament blockade serves as a reminder that structural adjustments are necessary to address the underlying causes of environmental degradation in the fight against climate change.
