An environmental activist group known as the Tire Extinguishers claimed to have deflated the tires of over 900 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) on the mornings of November 28th and 29th 2022.
According to reports, the Activist group synchronized the campaign through the various branches of the group, established in many major European nations. Reports were received from eight countries around the world, where the group’s branches were established.
Many government agencies and officials reported the group’s actions in cities like Berlin, Saarbrucken, Hanover, Essen, and Bonn in Germany, Dundee, London, Bristol, and Leeds in the UK, Amsterdam and Enschede in the Netherlands, Paris, and Lyon in France, Innsbruck in Austria, New York in the United States of America, Malmo in Sweden and Winterthur and Zurich in Switzerland.
The group claimed that SUVs are high-carbon vehicles, and are the major sources of pollution, henceforth the group’s collective action should be considered a significant breakthrough in the fight against climate change. According to estimates the Tire Extinguishers have claimed to have deflated over 10,000 SUVs in various cities across the world, since March as a global effort to rid urban areas of the vehicles.
On the Tyre Extinguishers organization’s website, the group addressed their tactics as guerrilla climate activism, thus explaining their protests against SUVs. The group believes that SUVs are a climate disaster and cause heavy air pollution.
The group’s spokesperson Marion Walker said in the official statement of the group SUVs and 4x4s are a disaster for the climate, public safety, and health of the general public as well. Every year larger and heavier cars are taking to the streets, all so that a few rich and privileged individuals can flex their wealth.
As governments and other state agencies have failed to protect the citizens from the growing threat of high-exhaust vehicles in the face of accelerating climate change, the activists have taken matters into their own hands.
The group’s actions made into global headlines, as with every passing year the tactics of climate activists are becoming harsher and harsher, something that the climate activist groups deem as inevitable and unavoidable to attract public attention as well as the governments.
The group aims to make it impossible to own a heavily polluting 4x4 in the urban areas of the world, as most of the global vehicular emissions occur in the cities. Deflating the tires of these massive and unnecessary vehicles may cause enough inconvenience and expense for their owners to mend their ways.
The activist also acknowledged that the group’s actions were the first ever in history and can also be considered revolutionary as never before has there been such a collective and global effort to battle climate change. She further added that the group’s members may face reprimands as well as prison time in the course of their campaigns, but the climate activists perceive it as a necessary risk.
