To determine which university students have the "highest-quality" sperm, a sperm bank in China is running a bizarre contest.
In exchange for their sperm donations, students are getting cash from the Henan Provincial Human Sperm Bank in central China.
The news comes as China struggles to locate high-calibre sperm donors and against a backdrop of government figures indicating that China's population decreased last year for the first time in more than 60 years.
The bank reportedly started the contest on September 10th, according to SCMP.
“Due to environmental pollution and work pressure, the overall sperm quality has deteriorated. This has led to infertility in a number of married couples, bringing disharmony to their families and society,” the Henan sperm bank wrote on the social media platform Weibo.
“Like blood, sperm donation is a humanitarian activity. It can bring good news to infertile couples. Therefore, we call on university students to donate sperm to make a contribution to society,” it added.

The bank reportedly started the contest on September 10th, according to SCMP.
The goal of the competition is to select two winners—the man with the highest sperm count and the one with the 'most vigorous' sperm.
However, university students must adhere to specific requirements, such as being between the ages of 20 and 45 and height should be at least 5 feet 4 inches tall.
Additionally, they cannot be homosexual or have "promiscuous sexual histories," nor can they smoke, drink, or be frequent drug users.
Furthermore, individuals must abstain from sexual activity for five to seven days before the donation. They must practise good hygiene and take a shower before coming to make the contribution.
Students can make up to 20 donations over 50 days
They will receive a total payment of up to 6,100 yuan (about Rs 69,000) for their donation. Participants will receive 200 yuan ($2,309) for each donation, according to the SCMP.
This serves as a payment for whatever charges they incur, such as transportation fees.
20 donations will result in a bonus of 2,100 yuan (about Rs 23,857).
The Strait Times reported that sperm samples will be assessed on:-
- Sperm concentration
- Volume
- Structure
- Motility (how fast sperm moves).
According to SCMP, contestants will also receive a "professional assessment" of their fertility at the end of the competition.
