Chile: Robbers Failed to Steal $32.5 Million From an Airport

Two people were killed in a multimillion-dollar heist that was foiled at Chile's biggest airport, raising questions about the country's escalating crime rate.

At the Arturo Merino Benítez international airport in Santiago, Chile, a video of a gunfight between thieves and officials of Chile's DGAC aviation agency below a Latam Airlines plane is being widely shared online.

Officials reported that one robber and a member of the DGAC airport security staff died in the early-morning Wednesday robbery attempt. Manuel Monsalve, the deputy interior minister at La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago, stated that roughly ten criminals tied up a security guard and drove into the airport in three vehicles.

“There was an intense exchange of gunfire,” Monsalve said, noting that security officials “foiled a robbery by a highly organized, highly armed and probably very well-planned robbery”.
