Chester zoo celebrates a rare Macaque monkey's birth

An endangered primate was born at a British zoo, and the staff there has been rejoicing. On May 16, a rare Sulawesi crested macaque monkey was born to parents Rumple and Mamassa at Chester Zoo. The unnamed baby has been spotted moving about and climbing on tree branches in its cage.

Sulawesi crested macaques are social creatures, and several of the females have been sharing parenting duties, according to Mark Brayshaw, head of mammals at the zoo. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated the monkey as critically endangered, and the zoo estimates that less than 5,000 individuals remain in the species' original habitat on the island of Sulawesi. Numerous things, including illicit logging, farmland development, hunting, the illegal pet trade, and deforestation, pose a threat to them.
