Canada to impose a cap on foreign students amid housing crisis

Canada has been dealing with a housing crisis and rising unemployment. In light of this circumstance, Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller has stated that he will consider limiting the number of overseas students living in the country in the coming months, CTV News reported.

Marc Miller said that to help lower the demand for housing in both the first and second quarters of this year, he would consider imposing a cap on international students.

The administration did not, however, specify the degree of the immigration system's reduction. Marc Miller pointed out that a cap on overseas students would not be a "one-size-fits-all solution." Marc Miller stated to the media that,

“This is a conversation the federal government will need to have with provincial governments to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis."

When asked about the amount of international students in Canada, he stated,

"That volume is disconcerting. It's a system that has gotten out of control." The Liberals want to increase immigration to Canada by 485,000 in 2024 and by 500,000 in 2025 and 2026.

Additionally, Marc Miller emphasized the necessity for research on the effects of the growing immigrant population, including both temporary and permanent residents, stating, "And now it's time for us to have a conversation about volumes and the impact that is having in certain areas." According to Miller, housing was only one factor in the equation; the federal government also needed to lower the workforce's average age.
