Canada is committed to strengthen ties with India': PM Trudeau asserts amidst tension

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Friday that Canada is committed to having "stronger ties" with India. This comes after days after making "credible allegations" that the Indian government was involved in the execution of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

While it is "extremely important" that Canada and its allies communicate with India on the claims of Nijjar's killing, Trudeau stated during a press conference in Montreal that his country would also like to work with India to improve bilateral relations.

At a news conference on Thursday in Montreal, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he thinks it is "extremely important" for Canada and its allies to keep up "constructive and serious" engagement with India given its rising significance on the global stage.

“India is a growing economic power and important geopolitical player. And as we presented with our Indo-Pacific strategy, just last year, we’re very serious about building closer ties with India,” stated Trudeau.

“At the same time, obviously, as a rule of law country, we need to emphasise that India needs to work with Canada to ensure that we get the full facts of this matter,” the Canadian prime minister added.

The claims made by Trudeau against India in the murder of Nijjar, according to the US, will be brought up by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a meeting with his Indian counterpart Dr S. Jaishankar on Thursday in Washington, DC, per Trudeau.

“The Americans have been with us in speaking to the Indian government about how important it is that they be involved in following up on the credible allegations that agents of the Indian government killed a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil,” Trudeau stated.
