The California Senate Judiciary Committee has recently passed a bill that seeks to ban caste discrimination within the state. This move, if approved, would make California the first US state to add caste bias as a protected category in its anti-discrimination laws. Seattle, a city in the US, recently outlawed caste discrimination, becoming the first US city to do so. However, the bill has faced opposition from some Indian-American business and temple organizations, who argue that it could disproportionately impact Indian hotel and motel owners, as well as promote prejudice against Indian-American small business owners.
Additionally, some Hindu organizations have criticized the bill, claiming that it vilifies Hindu customs and traditions and makes Hindu temples more vulnerable to physical attacks. On the other hand, the bill has been celebrated by caste-oppressed Californians and their supporters, who argue that it is urgently needed due to the high levels of discrimination faced by the caste-oppressed community in the state. There are 4.2 million individuals of Indian descent residing in the United States, making them the second-largest immigrant group in the country.
