On June 24, A judge at the Sarlahi District Court on June 24 found Ram Bahadur Bamjan, aka Buddha Boy, guilty of sexually assaulting a minor girl. He has set July 1 for sentencing the punishments. He could face at least 12 years in jail, but can still appeal his conviction.
'Buddha Boy’s’ Arrest
It was in January 2024, when Ram Bahadur Bamjan, was arrested in a suburb of Kathmandu by police on charges of sexual assault and suspicion of involvement in the disappearance of at least four of followers from his camps. His failed attempt to flee by jumping two floors from a window made him arrested. Police claim that they have seized Nepalese banknotes worth $227,000 and other foreign currencies amounting to $23,000 at the time of the arrest.
About Ram Bahadur Bamjan
"Ram Bahadur Bamjan is reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in southwestern Nepal some 2,600 years ago and became revered as the Buddha”, as believed by many Nepalese.
Bomjan when he was 16, also disappeared for nine months to wander the wilderness of eastern Nepal, prompting a round-the-clock vigil by Buddhist monks who prayed for his safe return.
Bamjan, 33, became famous in southern Nepal in 2005, when claimed to be able to meditate without moving for months while sitting beneath a tree with no food or water.
Criticism? Yes, Buddhist scholars have been sceptical of Bamjan’s claims. Moreover, some reporters filmed him eating, and he was also spotted sleeping when his followers said he was meditating in private.
His ‘Past-Image’
Bomjan have been accused in many cases, with dozens of assault complaints filed against him in 2010. He also mentioned that at the time he had beaten followers because they had disturbed his meditation. Although his popularity has waned due to these allegations of sexual and physical assaults on his followers, he still maintains camps in southern Nepal where thousands continue to come to worship or live.
