Belgium’s Courageous Steps Towards Denuclearization

Belgium has shut down its 40-year-old nuclear power plant. Tihange 2 is the second nuclear plant to be shut down, the first nuclear plant near Antwerp was shut down in September last year.

Belgium housed 7 nuclear reactors in total and plans to shut all of them down by 2035. These steps are being taken as more than half of Belgium's energy needs are relied on nuclear power.

The Belgian prime minister also stated that these steps are being taken to take back control of the country's ‘energy destiny’.

Belgium had the plan to denuclearize the country for many years but had postponed it due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, as it was affecting many European countries.

Many might still argue if this is the right time to stop nuclear power in a country, as war has still not ceased and new threats are being uncovered daily.

Since Belgium has had this plan in the mill for many years there is no doubt that they have prepared and protected the country with their best efforts. But will it be enough, if the time comes, is the real question.

Because it is no shock to anyone, with the current situation of the world, countless countries have been gearing up their nuclear weapons and power, just in case.

In the chaos of this seeing Belgium, a country already present with nuclear plants stepping away from them and trying to go green is a piece of fresh and shocking news.

Although Belgium has an agreement with Engie, an energy company to restart two of its nuclear power reactors in 2026 and operate them for further 10 years.
