Beijing is currently experiencing an unusually cold wave in December.
In a remarkable historical occurrence, Beijing, the capital city of China, is currently experiencing an unprecedented cold wave that has shattered temperature records for December dating back to 1951. The northern and northeastern regions of the country have been severely affected by this extremely cold weather, with certain areas reaching chilling temperatures below minus 40 degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit. This icy blast can be attributed to the arrival of frigid Arctic air.
Unusually cold temperatures have resulted in a record-breaking freeze.
As of Sunday, the Beijing weather observatory has recorded over 300 consecutive hours of sub-freezing temperatures since December 11, which is the highest number for the month since records began. Throughout this period, the capital city experienced nine consecutive days with temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit), as reported by the state-backed Beijing Daily.
Henan Province Heating Crisis
The central Chinese province of Henan, located southwest of Beijing, is experiencing a winter heating supply crisis. The city of Jiaozuo in Henan faces some challenges due to heating boiler malfunctions at JiaoZuo WanFang Aluminum Manufacturing, a significant supplier. Urgent measures are being taken to restore the heating supply, and it is expected that operations will resume by December 26.
To address the situation, the city of Jiaozuo has decided to temporarily suspend heat supply for most businesses, giving priority to essential services such as hospitals. However, certain residential compounds may still encounter some disturbances during this maintenance period.

Heating reductions in other cities
Two more cities in Henan, namely Puyang and Pingdingshan, have implemented measures to temporarily halt heat supply to government departments and administrative institutions owing to the harsh winter conditions. The local authorities have emphasized the importance of prioritizing residential usage during this period of extreme weather.
Forecast and Relief
The weather forecast suggests a much-needed break from the cold as warm air is predicted to move from the north to the south, gradually increasing temperatures. By 2 p.m. on Sunday, several regions in central and eastern China saw a gentle rise in temperatures, with certain areas observing an increase of over 10 degrees Celsius.
In conclusion.
Given the extraordinary cold wave currently being experienced, the residents and businesses in Beijing and Henan are courageously enduring the severe winter conditions. It is of utmost importance for the affected areas to place the well-being of their residents as a top priority while ongoing efforts are made to restore heating supplies. The anticipated relief in the form of rising temperatures offers a glimpse of hope during this challenging cold spell.
