Argentine meteorologist makes history as first female head of UN weather agency

Celeste Saulo, an Argentine meteorologist, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural female leader of the United Nations weather agency. On Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that Saulo had obtained the required two-thirds majority support from member states, solidifying her election as the head of the organization. With her extensive experience as the director of Argentina's National Meteorological Service since 2014, Saulo brings valuable expertise to her new role.

Additionally, she has made notable contributions as an academic and researcher in the field. Saulo will succeed Petteri Taalas, who will step down as the secretary general of the WMO at the end of this year after serving two terms. Since 2015, Saulo has been an active member of the WMO's executive council, further demonstrating her dedication to meteorological work on an international scale. This appointment holds great significance as the WMO plays a pivotal role in coordinating global efforts in meteorology, which have become increasingly vital due to the surge in extreme weather events caused by climate change.
