Air New Zealand to Conduct Passenger Weight Survey for International Flights to Enhance Fuel EfficiencyAir New Zealand has revealed its plans to introduce a trial program where passengers will be requested to measure their own weight prior to boarding international flights. The initiative aims to improve fuel efficiency by providing pilots with accurate information on the weight and balance of the aircraft prior to takeoff. Over the next few weeks, more than 10,000 customers traveling on Air New Zealand's international network will be invited to participate in the passenger weight survey.
Following the resurgence of international travel after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, Air New Zealand stated that it is time for international flyers to contribute their weight data. The airline assured passengers that there will be no visible display of their individual weights, acknowledging that stepping on the scales can be intimidating. Alastair James, an Air New Zealand official specializing in load control, emphasized that passengers' cooperation in this survey will aid in ensuring safe and efficient flights. From May 29 to July 2, a passenger weight survey will be conducted at the entrance to the gate lounge for designated flights departing from Auckland International Airport. It is worth noting that Air New Zealand is not the first airline to implement such a measure. Finnish airline Finnair began weighing passengers in 2017 to update outdated data on average passenger weights, as many carriers still rely on information from the European Aviation Safety Agency (now known as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency) dating back to 2009.
