In the most recent incident of gun violence in the US, an attacker in a bulletproof vest opened fire on the street in Philadelphia on Monday night, killing five people and injuring two boys, according to authorities. There was no direct relationship between the victims and the gunman at the time they were killed.
The shootings occurred over several rows of city blocks in the Kingsessing neighborhood in the southwest. Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw stated at a news conference that the offender was captured in an alley after surrendering while being chased by responding police officers as he continued to shoot.
"At this point, all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals,” Outlaw said.
She added that he had an "AR-type rifle," a handgun, a bulletproof vest, numerous magazines, and a police scanner.
A 40-year-old guy was identified as the alleged shooter. No further information was immediately available, however, there was another individual in custody.
The ages of the deceased men ranged from 20 to 59. 2 and 13-year-old-year boys, both casualties, are in the hospital. According to Outlaw, their status is steady.
The nation has experienced the highest number of mass killings and fatalities up to this point in a single year on record.
The database shows that there have been more than 550 mass killings since 2006, resulting in at least 2,900 deaths and at least 2,000 wounded.
