US President Joe Biden has urged stricter gun control measures after a string of shootings during the Independence Day festivities. In a statement by the White House, President Biden called on Republican lawmakers to join him in supporting "commonsense reforms" to reduce gun violence. These reforms include banning assault weapons, requiring universal background checks, and ending the legal immunity enjoyed by gun manufacturers. President Biden spoke out against the wave of shootings that have taken place in the United States over the past few days. He said that these shootings are "tragic and senseless" and have "endured" in communities across the country. A series of shootings occurred in different cities across the United States from Friday night to early Tuesday morning.
In Chicago, Illinois, one person was fatally shot and three others were wounded on Friday night. Two more incidents took place on Sunday: a shooting at a club in Wichita, Kansas, which resulted in nine people being injured, and a block party in Baltimore, Maryland, where two individuals were killed and 28 others were injured. On Monday, gunfire in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania claimed the lives of five individuals and left two children injured. In Fort Worth, Texas, three people were killed following a shooting that took place during a neighbourhood festival on the same evening, and in the early hours of Tuesday, in Lansing, Michigan, a shooting occurred at a party, injuring five individuals

During the first six months of this year, the Gun Violence Archive recorded a total of 346 mass shootings in the United States. These incidents are classified as instances of gun violence where a minimum of four victims were either injured or killed. Among these cases, fifteen occurred within the past week, resulting in the loss of sixteen lives. President Biden expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims who lost their lives during a devastating incident in Highland Park, Illinois, one year ago. The tragic event occurred during an Independence Day parade when a shooter was indiscriminately fired, claiming the lives of seven innocent people.

The President has continuously urged for an assault weapon ban as a continuation of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which he signed into law last year. This law, enacted shortly after a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, includes provisions for stricter background checks on young gun buyers, increased funding for mental health services, and incentives for states to implement "red flag" laws. These laws enable the confiscation of firearms from individuals considered to be a risk to themselves or others.
