Former US President Donald Trump has given a warning of "death and destruction" if he faces criminal charges, hours after New York prosecutors scrutinizing his wife's financial support for porn star Stormy Daniels said they would not be intimidated.
The post early Friday on Trump's Truth Social website brought turmoil of verbal attacks on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg since last Saturday, when Trump falsely predicted he would be arrested three days later and called his followers to protest.
"What kind of person can blame another person, in this case the former president of the United States, who received more votes than any sitting president in history and the number one candidate for the Republican Party, of a crime when it is known that no a crime has been committed, and know that the potential death and destruction of such a false accusation could be disastrous for our country?” he wrote.
Trump then answered his own question by adding, "Just a degenerate psycho who really hates America!" clearly implying to Bragg, Manhattan's first black district attorney, whom the former president called an "animal" a day earlier.
The NYPD and FBI investigated a letter to Bragg that contained a death threat and a white powdery substance that later were found to be harmless. The letter is said to be from Orlando, Florida and was posted on Tuesday.
It all started last weekend when Trump predicted his own arrest would happen this Tuesday and called on his followers to protest and "Take back our stand!" repeating the rhetoric that inspired his supporters to attack the Capitol. Trump held a campaign event Saturday in Waco, Texas, 30 years after an attack by federal agents on a religious group called the Branch Davidians killed 86 people, including four police officers.
For some, the case represented excessive government influence, and for some far-right groups, it is a defining moment.
