Aapda mein avsar - Are Indians willing to put their lives at risk for an Israeli job

Israel is reportedly recruiting at least 40,000 Indian workers to address a labour shortage in its construction industry due to the Gaza war, with many hopeful that working in Israel will enable them to support their families and say they are confident the government will keep its citizens safe

According to reports, Israel's construction industry employed approximately 80,000 Palestinian workers from the West Bank and an additional 17,000 from the Gaza Strip. But after October 7, everyone lost their right to work.

The Hindu reported that the latest push to screen Indian workers comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "advance" the date of workers' arrival during a phone call on December 19.

Advertising 10,000 positions to start the hiring drive

Last week, the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana each began advertising 10,000 positions to start the hiring drive, which is being overseen by India's National Skill Development Corporation, as per report

The trade unions claim that the Union government is ignoring all of the safeguards it normally provides for Indian workers travelling abroad to conflict zones. These workers will not even be required to register on the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) 'e-migrate' portal, and several government Ministries and agencies have disclaimed any responsibility for the workers' welfare and safety, according to The Hindu.

According to the report, workers who travel to Israel will not receive any of the labour protections such as insurance, medical coverage, and employment guarantees that the government requires for workers travelling to most Gulf countries and other labour markets.

80 and 100 foreign workers were killed during the October 7

The report mentioned that the 2,000 openings for plastering workers, 2,000 for ceramic tile workers, and 3,000 each for iron bending and frame workers. The monthly salary is approx. ₹1.37 lakh (6,100 Israeli shekels), and a deduction will be made for accommodation, food, and medical insurance. The Rozgar (Employment) departments of U.P. and Haryana have placed advertisements for 10,000 jobs this month, and screening will be conducted for these positions.

When asked, as quoted in the report " NSDC CEO Ved Mani Tiwari told The Hindu that the advertisements had been issued by the State governments, not by the NSDC."

“We have no mandate for Israel or the employers. We are not a recruiting company. Some State governments have invited applications for jobs in Israel and our mandate is to provide skill training for workers,” Mr. Tiwari said.

Sadly, about 80 and 100 foreign workers were killed during the October 7 attacks on Israel and the ensuing conflict, prompting many countries, including India, to evacuate their expatriate citizens. Only about 1,300 of the 18,000 Indian citizens in Israel chose government-run flights as part of Operation Ajay.
