“Digital arrest” scams are a new form of cybercrime where criminals pose as officers to blackmail individuals online. These scammers call through platforms like whatsapp and other social media platforms and claim the victim or his or her family member is involved in criminal activities, such as drug smuggling or illegal document handling. They demand immediate payment to "resolve" the case or face further action. Criminals use real looking photos, studio setups resembling police stations and false identities to convince their targets of their authenticity.
How Do Digital Arrest Scams Work?
Scammers inform the victim that their name is linked to a parcel containing illegal items. In some cases, they even extend the intimidation to family or friends, saying the person is detained or under investigation. The victim is then forced to pay bribe or ransom to avoid legal repercussions. Some are even forced to remain online with the criminals, creating the illusion of being “arrested” digitally until the demands are met.
Actions Taken by the Government and Microsoft
To counter these scams, the Indian government in collaboration with Microsoft has blocked over 1,000 Skype IDs associated with these scams few months back. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is also targeting related SIM cards and bank accounts set up by cybercriminals to launder money obtained through scams.
How to Stay Safe from Digital Arrest Scams
To protect yourself, avoid sharing personal information over phone calls or online platforms, especially with unknown contacts. Be cautious of unexpected calls from individuals claiming to be officials and verify the details with official sources. If you suspect any cybercrime activity, report it immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
