Army Day in India is celebrated on January 15th every year to mark the day when General (later Field Marshal) K.M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian commander-in-chief of the Indian Army in 1949. On this day, the Indian Army pays homage to its martyrs and showcases its firepower and capabilities in a parade held in New Delhi.
This year, the Indian Army Day was celebrated on January 15th,2023. The main event of the celebration was held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in New Delhi, where a parade was held to showcase the Indian Army's firepower and capabilities. The parade was attended by dignitaries, including the President and the Prime Minister of India, and featured a display of tanks, artillery, and other military equipment.
In addition to the parade, various events were organized across the country to mark the occasion. These included wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials, cultural programs, and exhibitions showcasing the Indian Army's history and achievements.
India celebrates Army Day to remember its army's valour and sacrifices in keeping the nation safe and secure.
The Army Day parade, held at the Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, is one of the chief highlights of the celebrations. The army chief takes the salute and inspects the parade led by the General Officer Commanding, HQs Delhi Area.
The parade ground is one of the largest such grounds in Delhi. It was named after Cariappa in December 2016 in honour of the Field Marshal. The army chief gives away gallantry awards to soldiers and unit citations to different battalions for outstanding and sustained performance during operations and also peacetime.
Recipients of Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra (the highest wartime and peacetime gallantry awards, respectively) participate in the Army Day parade every year.
