Byculla zoo brought 8 penguins from Coex Aquarium, Seoul, in South Korea in 2016. That decision was largely criticised by citizens as the environment and other conditions were not very suitable for penguins. Later, a penguin died because the surroundings didn't suit him. But now, in 2023, this number has increased to 15. They were named Donald, Daisy, Dora, Molt, Flipper, Siri, Papaya, Olive, Nemo, Oreo, Bubble and others. Now Byculla zoo authorities have decided to exchange some of the penguins with other zoos in return for crocodiles and turtles.
As per the Central Zoo Authority, one zoo can exchange some animals with zoos. There is a need for crocodiles, turtles and gharials in Byculla zoo. Byculla zoo is planning to exchange penguins with Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad. But there has to be proper infrastructure for the survival of penguins. It will take time.
So, Byculla zoo will soon welcome new animals to the team.
