During the past three weeks of continuous rainfall in Delhi NCR and its neighbouring regions, there has been a noticeable increase in cases of conjunctivitis. According to Dr JS Titiyal, Chief of the RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, Delhi is reporting around 100 cases of conjunctivitis daily. This rise in cases is a seasonal trend, usually associated with the flu season, and is primarily caused by viruses. Dr Harsh Kumar from the Centre for Sight also confirmed the occurrence of conjunctivitis cases during the monsoon season, marked by symptoms like redness, itching, watering, and occasional discharge. A private eye care centre in Delhi recorded 1521 cases of conjunctivitis overall in India and 1032 instances in Delhi NCR. Comparing this data to the same period in the previous year (July 2022), there has been a significant increase in the number of cases, with 646 instances in Delhi NCR and 1202 cases countrywide.
To prevent the further spread of this eye infection, it is crucial to raise awareness and take prompt action. Dr Samir Sud, director and co-founder of Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, emphasized the importance of practising good hygiene, such as regularly washing hands after coming indoors. Dr Titiyal advised using dark goggles, avoiding swimming, refraining from close contact with others, and not touching the eyes of those suffering from conjunctivitis. Children with the infection are also recommended to stay away from school temporarily to prevent it from spreading to other students. Dr Harsh Kumar also provided safety tips, urging people to stay away from crowded areas and avoid touching knobs and railings. Using antibacterial eye drops is recommended in case of conjunctivitis. To minimize the risk of spreading conjunctivitis, Dr Samir Sud emphasized the importance of maintaining proper cleanliness by thoroughly cleaning hands, refraining from touching the eyes, and avoiding sharing personal items like towels or eye makeup.
