According to a statement released by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday, the cities of Aurangabad and Osmanabad in Maharashtra have been renamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively. The ministry further stated that it had accepted the proposal and had no issues with the cities' renaming.
An earlier statement made by additional solicitor-general Anil Singh to the Bombay High Court in February said that the central government had no objections to renaming Osmanabad. He claimed that no decision had been made about the renaming of Aurangabad. At the time, appeals against the decision to rename the two cities were being heard by a bench made up of Justice Sandeep V. Marne and Acting Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala.
Previously, On June 29, 2022, just before Uddhav Thackeray resigned as CM of Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's cabinet decided to rename Aurangabad Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad Dharashiv. It was one of the last actions taken by the Uddhav government.
