The Sikkim avalanche took place along the border between India and China, on the 14th mile of the Jawaharlal Nehru Road between Gangtok and Nathula.
At least 20 tourists were hurt in the deadly incident, which occurred when an avalanche hit them in Sikkim on Tuesday afternoon, according to state officials.
All tourists and tourist cars have been located, according to a representative of the NDRF (national disaster response force). There is no longer a requirement for the NDRF because operations have been terminated. Whereabouts and details will be shared later.
Seven tourists are reportedly dead and 12 tourists are receiving medical care at Sochaygang. According to a report from the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority.
The rescue efforts included members of the Indian Army, however, they had to be canceled due to a second avalanche.
An Indian Army official said, “There was another slide at the same location at 5.35 pm on Gangtok-Nathula road. It has also started snowing, making the rescue operation dangerous. Accordingly, the rescue and search operations have been called off by the district administration due to fear of more slides. The JNM Axis is closed now due to the slide.”
Responding to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the deceased.
“Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected”, PM Modi said.
