The Narcotics Control Bureau conducted a two-week-long extensive crackdown and apprehended two Russians, including an Olympic medal-winning swimmer, a former police officer, and an Indian, for operating an international drug cartel from Goa.S Varganova, who won a silver medal in the 1980 Olympics, was allegedly involved in the Russian drug trade and accused of supplying drugs to foreigners. Acting on a tip-off, the NCB initiated an investigation and discovered that Varganova, along with two others, including a local resident, was reportedly operating in this trade. The NCB placed Akash, a local resident, under discreet surveillance when they discovered that he was part of a larger network and was taking orders from a Russian kingpin who was reportedly the leader of the drug cartel.
Following intensive intelligence-based operations, a former police officer and Russian national named Andre was arrested, and 20 LSD blots were confiscated from him. During his interrogation, he divulged that he had been growing hydroponic weed in his local residence, and three pots of the plants were subsequently discovered there. According to the central agency, Andre had travelled to multiple cities to expand his network and was managing a widespread group of street peddlers. The trio was apprehended and the authorities confiscated counterfeit documents, identification cards, currency notes, and the necessary materials for cultivating hydroponic marijuana from them. Additionally, the group was found in possession of a variety of illegal drugs including 88 LSD blots, 8.8 grams of cocaine1, 16.49 grams of hash oil440 kg of hydroponic weed, 242.5 grams of charas, 2 grams of methamphetamine and 410 grams of hash cake. The authorities also recovered a sum of Rs 4.88 lakh in cash from the individuals.
