On April 28th, a doctor working at a well-known hospital in Pune's Katraj allegedly fell victim to "sextortion" at the hands of online fraudsters who coerced him into paying Rs 21,000. The doctor lodged a complaint with the cyber police station of Pune city police on Saturday, and the police have since launched an investigation. According to the police report, the doctor received a video call on his WhatsApp number while he was on duty at the hospital. Upon answering the call, the doctor saw a woman undressing on the screen and quickly hung up, but not before the fraudster took screenshots of the incident. The fraudster then threatened to share the images on social media and demanded payment from the doctor. The doctor was instructed to scan a QR code and make an online payment of Rs 21,000. The doctor complied with the demands before approaching the police. The accused has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, and their identity is yet to be determined.
