Namibian-imported cheetah Sasha dies in Madhya Pradesh

One of the cheetahs that was relocated from Namibia to India as part of a reintroduction program has passed away due to a kidney infection. Sasha, a five-year-old female cheetah, showed signs of weakness during a routine check and was diagnosed with dehydration and kidney-related issues. A blood test confirmed high levels of creatinine, indicating an infection in the kidney. The seven other cheetahs are reportedly in good health.

Sasha was one of five female cheetahs brought in from Namibia last year, as part of an effort to revive the cheetah population in India, where they became extinct over 70 years ago. Last year, two female cheetahs were released into the wild by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday in Kuno National Park. Recently, two more cheetahs, Elton and Freddie, were released, bringing the total number of released cheetahs to four out of the eight brought in from Namibia.

The Kuno National Park is now home to 20 cheetahs, with an additional dozen male and female cheetahs brought in from South Africa in February this year. South Africa has signed an agreement with India to introduce more African cheetahs to the country in the coming decade. This intercontinental translocation project aims to reintroduce the big cats to India.
