On Saturday evening, a fire broke out in an abandoned building near the Manipur secretariat complex, just a few hundred metres from the official bungalow of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, as per police reports.
The fire quickly engulfed the building. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Following the incident, security was heightened near the Chief Minister's residence, however, no major damage has been reported to the residence.
Four fire trucks were dispatched to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire within an hour.
According to the Imphal West Superintendent of Police, “Immediately, teams of Imphal West Police and fire trucks rushed to the spot and doused the fire... The first floor of the house was partially gutted."
The abandoned building belongs to the late IAS officer T Kipgen, a former Chief Secretary of Goa. It had been vacant since violence erupted in Manipur last year. Investigation is ongoing.
