Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that he will not be resigning at this critical juncture, following a morning of rumours that he might quit. The CM was supposed to meet with Governor Anusuiya Uikey during the day, which led to rumours that he might resign. After word got out, a large group of women blocked the road close to the Nupi Lal memorial complex, which is a little over 100 metres from the chief minister's official residence. Security improvements were undertaken in the neighbourhood surrounding the home and the road leading to Raj Bhavan.
Manipur's mother, Sarojini Leima, said that if he quits, President's Rule would happen, which is not okay. Around 2:20 p.m., Singh and a group of about 20 MLAs left his home to go to Raj Bhavan. However, the crowd outside stopped them, and a few ministers, led by PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam, came out to talk to the crowd. When they did, the crowd started chanting, "We want Biren." Minister L. Susindro Metitei used a loudspeaker to read the retirement letter that was meant to be given to the Governor. The piece of paper was then given to a few of the women, who tore it up.
When the CM's house was returned, a few ministers went outside to tell the people that he had decided not to quit. The crowd outside the CM's house started to thin out, and he went on Twitter to say, "At this critical time, I want to make it clear that I will not be resigning as Chief Minister."
Violence broke out again in the state the day before Friday's events, with two people from the Meitei community killed by gunfire in the Kangpokpi area. Tensions got worse when one of the bodies was taken to the Khwairamband women's market in the middle of the city. Hundreds of people, mostly women, gathered there and chanted against the Biren Singh government for not being able to stop violence.
Sapam, a government spokesperson and minister, said that these events led Singh to decide to step down. The Chief Minister felt sad and felt like people no longer trusted him. A report on Friday said that he was due to give his resignation to the Governor that day, leading to rumours that he was leaving his job. However, sources in the BJP claimed that Singh had been asked to leave, but there was tension between the MLAs, which is why there were stories and rumours like this.
Singh has been under more fire, even from people in his own party who are from the Meitei community. Last week, nine Meitei MLAs, eight from the BJP and one who supports the Manipur government, sent a letter to the Prime Minister's Office, claiming that the people have lost all faith in the current state government.
After filing the memorandum, Sapam said that the action looked very separate, but it shouldn't because we all want what's best for Manipur.
