Love Tale: How a Pune boy arrested for spying was lured by an ISI agent's daughter 16 years ago

Upadhyay, a student of engineering at Annasaheb Magar College in Pimpri, became an agent of the ISI after developing a romantic relationship with a Pakistani girl named Fatima Sallaudin Shah. He was apprehended with confidential documents, including 12 CDs featuring images of army units and Hindu religious sites. All documents, photographs, and CDs found in Upadhyay's possession will be destroyed, as directed by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Suchitra Ghodke. However, the Holy Koran that was discovered will be given as a donation to the library of the Anglo-Urdu Girls School. During the trial, the judge informed Upadhyay that if the Pakistani girl truly loved him, she would have sent a letter in his support, which she did not.

The girl had enticed Upadhyay by offering marriage and had also told him that he would be responsible for managing their business in London. According to the investigation, Upadhyay had developed feelings for Fatima while chatting online two years before he was detained. Her father was revealed to be an agent of the ISI. In October 2006 and January 2007, Upadhyay travelled to Pakistan twice and received military training at an unknown location in Karachi. Barge stated that the father of the girl sent a letter which disclosed that during Upadhyay's stay in Pakistan, he had converted to Islam. The letter instructed him to obtain the conversion certificate in his new name, which was Mohammed Bilal Mohammed Hussain. The letter also urged Upadhyay to dedicate his wealth, intelligence, and even life for the sake of Islam, and to convince his parents to embrace the religion. However, before he could board a flight to London, he was apprehended.
