Largest cough syrup racket busted by the Odisha Police; 35 arrested


The Odisha Police nabbed 35 suspected members of the ‘cough syrup mafia’ in Bolangir Odisha on March 14. The Odisha Police stated to the media that the arrests were part of “Mission Cough Syrup’, a crackdown on illegal Cough Syrup rackets in the state. Sana Negi and Prashant Kheti have been identified as major players by the police. 

Bolangir Police

The Bolangir Police successfully nabbed 35 miscreants involved in the illegal procurement, transport and sale of Eskuf Syrup in Bolangir as well as outside the state. The police have seized 12,960 Eskuf Syrup bottles, one desi-pistol, two-pickup vans, one Mahindra XUV, two motorcycles, gold ornaments, 17 mobile phones, and Rs 7,500 in cash in the operation. The police have also frozen Rs. 2 crores of M/s. Daffodil Drugs Pvt. Ltd, Kolkata, according to the statement of SP Nitin Kushalkar. 

Cough Syrup contains codeine phosphate which is often consumed by drug abusers as reported by Mint. Police forces around the country have been on the lookout for miscreants transacting in illegal cough syrup. Last week, police seized 3,000 cough syrup bottles from a truck along the Assam-Tripura border while Mumbai police’s Anti Narcotic Cell arrested four for the possession of banned cough syrup worth Rs 2.5 lakh on March 2.
