On Saturday, Kerala's chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, declared the State to be the first to enable digital banking on all eligible accounts.
The State-Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) reports that at least one product in the State's 3.76 million accounts is now digitally enabled. Under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s "Expanding and Deepening of Digital Payments Ecosystem" scheme, Thrissur became the first district in the State to implement digital banking in 2021.
As of March 2021, the Reserve Bank of India reported that the top 10 Indian states with the highest concentration of bank branches per 100,000 residents were:
