Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet's recent approval of a bill mandating 50% reservation for locals in managerial positions and 70% in non-managerial roles in private firms has ignited a firestorm of criticism. The bill defines 'local' as a Karnataka-born individual with at least 15 years of state domicile, proficiency in Kannada, and a secondary school certificate or equivalent.
Industry bodies have vehemently opposed the measure, warning of potential job losses and a deterrent effect on foreign investment. They argue that such restrictions could drive businesses away from the state, harming its economic growth prospects.
