On Wednesday, March 22nd, the Indian Railways announced that they will be reducing the fares for AC-3 tier economy class tickets. Additionally, they will continue to provide bedding just like before. This change is expected to bring more convenience & affordability to travellers on the Indian rail system. Railway authorities have announced that travellers with tickets booked either online or in person will receive a refund of any extra amount paid for the tickets.
Last year, a circular was issued to make economy-class ticket fares equal to that of an AC-3 tier ticket. However, as per the recent order, the fare for the economy class ticket has been reduced. If you're looking for an affordable AC travel option, the three-tier Economy coaches are the way to go! Introduced by the Railway Board, these coaches have a fare that is up to 7% cheaper than regular 3-tier AC rates.
Recently, the Railways revealed that an AC 3-tier coach has 72 berths whereas an AC 3-tier economy has 80. It also reported that in the first year of its introduction, it earned a revenue of Rs 231 crore from the economy class. From April to August 2022, 1.5 million people used these coaches and generated a revenue of Rs 177 crore.
