A professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has been placed on administrative leave after an investigation into the institute's research scholar's suicide in March was conducted.
On March 31, the deceased, Sachin Kumar Jain of the Mechanical Engineering department, was discovered dead in his Velachery room.
Professor Ashish Sen, who oversaw Jain's PhD, has been suspended following an investigation, the IIT announced on Tuesday.
After writing, "I am sorry, I am not good enough," as his WhatsApp status, Sachin Jain was discovered dead at his Velachery home. In April, an investigating committee was formed in response to demonstrations by students. Prof. Ashish Sen will not be allowed back in the lab till the investigation is over, as per the demands of the students. Prof. V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, made this announcement on April 13.
Students and Sachin Kumar Jain's brother, Bhawesh Jain, raised accusations that Sachin killed himself due to the PhD guide's cruel treatment. Due of Sachin's two-day absence from last year's conference without telling his guide, his buddies also accused him of being mistreated.
The committee sent a report with its conclusions and suggestions to Prof. V Kamakoti, the director of the institute, on August 14.
IIT-M students congratulated the university on its decision to suspend the professor by taking to social networking platform X, which was formerly Twitter.
According to the report that the inquiry committee turned in, Prof. Sen was the one who drove Sachin to commit suicide earlier this year. The student body expressed its gratitude to the IIT-M management for taking such a firm and brave stand against one of their classmates.
