In an unfortunate incident on Thursday, a third-year student at Shiv Nadar University in Greater Noida reportedly shot and killed his classmate before turning the firearm on himself in the boys' hostel. The two students, both 21 years old and pursuing a degree in BA Sociology, were identified. The university administration acted promptly, notifying the police after the shooting occurred outside the campus dining hall around 1:30 pm.
Both students were residents of the campus, residing in the girls' and boys' hostels respectively. Authorities recovered a locally made pistol from the scene, and initial investigations indicate that the students had been involved in a deteriorating relationship.
The families of the deceased students were informed, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. It is worth noting that the incident took place during the summer break when the majority of students had already returned home, resulting in a relatively empty campus. While there were no eyewitnesses to the shooting, the police have analyzed CCTV footage from the dining hall. The footage reveals the students hugging and engaging in a conversation. The male student had brought a parcel, presumably a gift, which the woman declined. Subsequently, he shot her in the abdomen, and despite her resistance, he fired another shot, causing her to collapse. The male student then fled towards the boys' hostel.
Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating how the student acquired the gun and managed to bring it onto the campus premises. A spokesperson from Shiv Nadar University expressed deep sorrow and anguish over the loss of the two students. They assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and emphasized the university's commitment to the safety and well-being of its students, staff, and the entire community. Furthermore, they stated that they are extending support to the affected families during this challenging period.
