Cyclone Sitrang set to hit Bengal-Bangladesh on Diwali

The tropical cyclone of post-monsoon, 2022 is about to form in the Bay of Bengal on October 24, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and is named Cyclone Sitrang by Thailand. This is the first cyclone to form in October by the Bay of Bengal since 2018 which was then named, Titli.

“After the withdrawal of the Southwest monsoon, there is a rise in ocean heating, which leads to a rise in sea surface temperature over the Bay of Bengal. The atmospheric moisture availability over the ocean region, too, is higher. So, when remnant systems from the South China Sea reach the Bay of Bengal, they get conducive conditions, aiding the formation and intensification of cyclones in October,” said Umasankar Das, IMD scientist from Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneshwar.

Around October 22, the low-pressure region is extremely likely to migrate west-northwestward and develop into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal. By October 23, it's likely to become a severe depression.

Cyclone Sitrang

“We are prepared for any situation. Though the cyclone is likely to escape the coastal area of the state, Odisha will receive very heavy rainfall on October 24 and October 25," said Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallick. Heavy to very heavy rain (64.5 to 204.4mm in 24 hours) would pour down on Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendraparha districts from October 22 to 25, as the storm is predicted to approach the beaches of Odisha. The IMD has given these coastal regions a yellow. On October 24 and 25, districts in West Bengal near the Ganges will also receive moderate rainfall and lightning. In an attempt to prevent possible damage due to the cyclone, the West Bengal government has been evacuating people from low-lying areas in several districts.

One of the six RMSCs in the globe, the IMD is responsible for informing its 13 member nations of cyclone advisories and alerts: Bangladesh, India, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
