Centre rings alarm bells on Covid, asks States for preparedness

The number of COVID cases nationwide surpassed 6,000 on Friday, reaching its highest level in 203 days. The Union health ministry has urged the states to maintain alertness, be ready, and not panic.

During a review meeting led by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, states were also instructed to perform simulated exercises to show and reinforce their preparedness across all health institutions on April 10 and 11. This was in the event of an additional uptick in cases.

Around ten districts in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Kerala have reported a positive rate of more than 10%, and eight states are reporting a large number of COVID cases.

India has seen a steady rise in COVID cases; the average daily cases increased from 571 in the week ending March 17 to 4,188 in the week ending April 7. Between the week ending March 31 and the week ending April 7, there were 29,318 cases discovered. 3.02 percent is the weekly positive rate.

The number of COVID-19 instances increased from slightly more than 3,000 at the end of March to 6,050 as of April 7. On April 7, there were more cases than at any other day since September.6,298 was the previous record high, which was found on September 16.

The most recent number shows an increase of 93.9% from the prior week. Since data from the health ministry was not available recently, the data used numbers from the World Health Organisation (WHO) instead.On the seven days ending September 16, there were approximately 38,000 weekly cases, down from the approximately 42,000 cases the week before.

A number of state health ministers were present for the review meeting and were asked to assess the level of preparation of their district administration and public health professionals for the upcoming Saturday and Sunday.

All of the state health ministers were tasked by Mandaviya to personally oversee and assess the infrastructure's readiness, including the availability of enough beds in designated hospitals and a sufficient supply of vital medications. Additionally, he requested that states update their COVID data on a regular basis on the COVID India Portal.

The health ministry demanded that 23 states where testing levels were found to be below the national average urgently increase testing rates and the proportion of RT-PCR in total tests. The health ministry reports that at its current rate, India performs 100 tests for every million people. Throughout the nation on Thursday, 1,78,533 tests were administered.
