Kailash Vijayvargiya, national general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sparked a controversy by commenting on how women dress these days. Vijayvargiya compared modern women's clothing to 'Surpanakha,' the sister of demon king Ravana.
He was speaking at a Jain community event in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, commemorating Hanuman Jayanti. He claimed that he couldn't see the image of a 'goddess' in women because they dressed so poorly."Just as Ravana's sister Surpanakha's nose was cut off, if someone casts an evil eye on our girls and daughters, their noses will be cut off as well," he said.
The BJP leader's remarks were widely condemned on social media, with many Twitter users calling out his misogynistic and regressive views. Some pointed out that Vijayvargiya's comments were not only offensive but also dangerous, as they could incite violence against women.
Several female politicians, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, also criticized Vijayvargiya's statement. Moitra, in particular, slammed the BJP leader for "normalizing and legitimizing violence against women."
The controversy surrounding Vijayvargiya's comments comes amid growing concerns about the safety and security of women in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there were over 32,000 cases of rape reported in the country in 2019, and experts say the actual number is likely much higher due to underreporting.
As the debate over Vijayvargiya's remarks rages on, many are calling for the BJP leader to apologize and retract his statement. Others are using the controversy as an opportunity to highlight the urgent need for greater gender equality and women's rights in India.
