The India Meteorological Department, on November 29, issued a warning of a potential cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal and its impact on Andhra Pradesh from December 2 to 6.
The cyclone is predicted to bring extensive and heavy to very heavy rains to Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on December 4th, 5th, and 6th. The director of the Amaravati Meteorological Center advises farmers to promptly harvest their crops to mitigate potential damage.
Initially, the forecast suggested minor effects with light to moderate rains in specific regions. However, the situation has evolved, and the low pressure in the South Andaman Sea is anticipated to escalate into a depression by Wednesday and a cyclone by Thursday.
On December 2, heavy rainfall at isolated places including Tirupati, Chittoor, and Nellore is expected. On December 3, the forecast indicates heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in Tirupati, Chittoor, and Nellore districts with additional rainfall at isolated places in Prakasam, Kadapa, and Annamayya districts.
For December 4, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few isolated places in Tirupati, Nellore, Bapatla, Krishna, Guntur, and Palnadu districts is anticipated. On December 5, there is a prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, potentially extremely heavy in isolated areas like NTR, Eluru Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, West Godavari, and Konaseema districts.
Acknowledging the potential escalation, the state government has been put on alert to take necessary actions, especially if the storm veers towards Coastal Andhra. Additionally, the IMD forecasts light to moderate rains in specific areas for the next three days.
There's an expectation of isolated heavy rainfall in Bapatla, East Godavari, Kakinada, Alluri Sitharama Raju, and Anakapalle districts. IMD Director S. Stella recommends taking appropriate measures, emphasizing the immediate harvesting of crops that are ready for harvest.
