The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has launched an indefinite strike in protest against the proposed transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court. The protest, which began on 25 March 2025, is being led by Bar Association President Anil Tiwari, who has emphasised that the agitation is not directed at any court or judge but against what he described as a betrayal of the judicial system. He argued that the transfer lacks transparency and demanded its reconsideration and withdrawal.
The Bar Association had already voiced its opposition to Justice Varma’s transfer the previous day and had resolved to escalate its resistance. Tiwari reaffirmed the association’s commitment to fighting the decision, insisting that lawyers across India were standing together on this issue. He declared that the strike would continue indefinitely until a resolution was reached, regardless of the consequences.
The Supreme Court collegium had confirmed Justice Varma’s transfer on 24 March 2025, making the recommendation public in a resolution uploaded on the apex court’s website. Justice Varma is currently facing an inquiry following the alleged discovery of large sums of cash at his official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi. The incident came to light after a fire broke out at his residence on 14 March, prompting fire officials to respond. In the wake of these developments, the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, decided to withdraw judicial work from him.
Justice Varma, however, has strongly denied any involvement in the alleged cash discovery, asserting that neither he nor his family had placed any money in the storeroom and condemning what he described as an attempt to frame and defame him. Justice Varma began his legal career as an advocate in 1992 and was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014. He became a permanent judge in 2016 before his transfer to the Delhi High Court in 2021.
