50 years of Project Tiger in India - what did we do?

April 1st marks a total of 50 years of India’s Project Tiger.

The project was first started in 1973, by Former Prime Mister Indira Gandhi. When the Project was first started, it cover 9 reserves, now the project cover almost 53 reserves. India also houses about 3,000 tigers, which is about 70% of the global tiger population and has been growing by 6% every year.

India has also been able to compile its promise of 2010, to double the number of cats by 2022. India reached this target by 2018.

Although we don't have the final census data for Project Tiger, it will be released by the prime minister during the 3-day event in Mysuru.
