The serene landscape of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced a moment of disturbance as a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of Thursday, as per an official statement. The incident occurred precisely at 4:17 am, sending ripples of concern through the region. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) promptly reported the event, revealing that the earthquake originated at a depth of 61 km beneath the surface.
Taking to social media, the NCS's official Twitter handle released a concise update, stating, "Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.3, Occurred on 03-08-2023, 04:17:58 IST, Latitude: 10.69 and Longitude: 92.05, Depth: 61 Km, Region: Andaman Islands, India." While the earthquake's magnitude was not exceptionally high, the depth of its epicentre added to the significance of the event.
Interestingly, this was not the first seismic activity to rattle the islands. Merely a day before, on Wednesday, the region experienced a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. The previous day's quake struck at approximately 5:40 am and had a shallower epicentre at just 10 km beneath the surface.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and urge residents and visitors in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to remain vigilant but calm in the face of these natural occurrences. As is common in earthquake-prone regions, preparedness and awareness can help minimize the impact of such events on lives and property.
