World Blood Donor Day - Tips to follow pre and post donation

“Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often” is the slogan featuring world blood donor day 2023, which is today. 14th June is observed as a World blood donor day. It is celebrated to inform people about the significance of blood donation and gives thanks to all those donors who have saved the lives of people.  Nothing can be as great work as blood donation. It is said that your blood can contribute to three different components, hence one person's blood can save up to 3 lives.  Our little contribution can give someone an entire life. But there are some rules or guidelines we must follow before and after blood donations to do the entire process in a scientific and correct manner.

Things to keep in mind before donating blood:

  • Before donating blood, you should know your blood type. Your age should be above 18 and your weight shouldn’t be less than 45. These are the very basic things we have to follow.
  • One must drink lots of water and intake iron-rich food within 2/3 days of donating blood. Never ever donate your blood with an empty stomach. Eat something 3-4 hours prior to donating.
  • If you are ill, have any infection like Malaria, Chicken pox or cold, avoid donating blood. If you are diagnosed with any serious diseases like HIV or Hepatitis, you are unable to donate your blood.
  • The most important thing is that you can’t donate blood if you are intoxicated with drugs or alcohol before 48 hours of donation.
  • Pregnant women or women in periods are strictly not allowed to denote their blood.

Things to keep in mind after donating blood:

  • The human body replenishes the amount of blood we lose while donating within the next 24 to 48 hours. But you must take care of yourself by taking proper rest, having a good amount of food and water.
  • Consume as much fruit or fruit juice as you can.
  • Do not get engaged in any heavy physical activity.
  • Avoid smoking after donation as you may feel dizzy
