Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease in which shape of the red blood cells is like sickle. Unlike regular RBS which are round and flexible, sickle cells become rigid and sticky. In sickle cells their oxygen carrying capacity is reduced. Cells become rigid and sticky which can slow or block blood flow. It is a rare disease with less than 1 million cases per year.
Symptoms:
- Anemia - Lack of Oxygen causing fatigue.
- Extreme pain in Chest, Abdomen, Joints
- Swellings of hands and feet
- Vision Problems

- Medication
- Blood Transfusions
- Bone Marrow Transplant (rare)
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated in Union Budget 2023, "A mission will be launched to eliminate sickle cell anaemia by 2047. The mission will entail awareness creation, universal screening of seven crore people in the 0-40 years age group in affected tribal areas and counselling through collaborative efforts of central ministries and state governments."
