According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a new, extremely drug-resistant (XDR) strain of Shigella is to blame for an increase in the occurrence of infectious stomach infections.
According to the CDC's February 24 statement, the bacteria can also cause fever, cramping in the stomach, and tenesmus in addition to inflammatory diarrhea. It is spread by sexual contact and the fecal-oral route. There are also various ways in which one can get in contact with Shigella, including changing the diaper of a sick child, acquiring the bacteria on your hands and then touching your mouth, or through tainted food and water.
Shigella is extremely contagious and causes 450,000 infections annually in the United States. Generally, people recover naturally, but those who have severe symptoms or underlying infections that damage their immune systems may require antibiotic treatment.
